Message from the President

April 20, 2021

Dear Shaarei Shomayim Members,

As you are aware, this is a time of transition in our shul. This letter is being written to provide our membership with an important update.

I am pleased to advise you that our Rabbi Search Committee has been struck and will be chaired by long time synagogue members Lori Disenhouse and Joel Monson. The first meeting of the committee took place this past Wednesday, April 14.

With input from the Executive, a list of prospective committee members was generated comprised of individuals who we strongly believe would work through this process thoughtfully, and bring to bear a range of perspectives that effectively represents the diverse membership of our shul. Click here to see list of shul members who have been invited to serve on the committee under Joel and Lori’s leadership.

The Executive is putting into place interim plans to ensure a smooth and seamless transition upon Rabbi Strauchler and Avital’s departure. Farewell celebrations are being planned by a committee chaired by Charlene Arje and Joyce Ekolve, and will take place this coming July when we will have the opportunity to honour and thank Rabbi Strauchler and Avital Strauchler for their important contribution to our community.

The formal transition will commence as of August 1, 2021 and we are planning for a transition period that will likely take one year, and planning for a new Rabbi beginning his role in Summer 2022. There is the possibility that this process could be shorter, should we find a suitable candidate that is available to begin at an earlier date. We do however want to allow ourselves sufficient time to look for our new Rabbi and the plans we are putting into place will allow us to do so if necessary.

If you have questions, concerns or ideas with respect to the search, please feel free to reach out to me at President@shomayim.org or to our Search Committee Chairs at searchcommittee@shomayim.org.

Wishing everyone good health!
