New Members Welcome

Please check up on our new initiative to welcome new members to our community. Be sure to say hi!

Sholom & Rifka Eisenstat

Everything old is new again and so it is with Sholom and Rifka Eisenstat. They were members of Shaarei Shomayim in the early eighties, but moved ‘up north’ (to Wilson) to raise their two daughters, Yedida and Ayala. Now that the girls are grown and have their own families, Sholom and Rifka downsized and moved back to the old ‘hood. They are thrilled to once again be members of Shaarei Shomayim.

Upon their return, the community warmly embraced them. They were happy to be reacquainted with old friends but also quickly welcomed by so many new ones. The shul has provided many avenues to enhance their community life from davening, learning opportunities, guest speakers, special kiddushes and Friday night dinners.

Outside of shul Sholom is busy creating a Jewish High School initiative, Adraba, and Rifka is very involved with the Client and Family Partners at Baycrest. Both are part of the core organizing committee for Limmud Toronto. And of course they are both busy with their grandchildren, Sid, Sadie and Gabi.

Jonathan Fucchansky & Rena Silver

Meet Jon and Rena. They are still (relatively) new members here at Shaarei Shomayim, and are excited to be here.

Jonathan grew up in Richmond Hill, and before getting married last summer was heavily involved on his local synagogue board. Rena grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, and became observant during a year abroad in Israel. During university, Rena devoted herself to campus Israel advocacy, and served as the president of Hasbara at York. Today, Jon works in marketing at a boutique firm downtown, and Rena works in publishing at Pearson Education.

Jon and Rena love baseball, although since Rena is a Red Sox fan and Jon loved the Blue Jays, its a miracle they get along. They're also fans of sketch comedy, and even have a cat named Gilda Catner (named in honour of the illustrious Gilda Radner). You might find them at a local board game cafe any given Saturday night. Jon and Rena are both passionate about Modern Orthodoxy, and are very happy to be part of a community that reflects the same passion. They both hope to get more involved and integrated here!
