Shabbat Programming

Shabbat is a cottage in time. It offers us time to spend with family and community and allows us the peace-of-mind to focus on learning and prayer. At Shaarei Shomayim, Shabbat allows us to run special programming – shabbatons, themed weekends, and the popular Scholar-In-Residence program – to add meaning to our life.

A feature program for the shul community, Shaarei Shomayim regularly welcomes scholars-in-residence for a full Shabbat of programming. This program offers members of the community several chances to meet and hear from distinguished and prominent academics, rabbis, scholars and leaders in the broader community and from across the world. Recent highlights include Rabbi Berel Wein, Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, and Dr. Yoram Hazony. Stay tuned for the 2015 Scholars-in-Residence schedule.

Communal Shabbat Meals

Sometimes in conjunction with Scholars-in-Residence and sometimes independent of them, our community hosts beautiful catered Shabbat meals. These meals take place on Friday night or Shabbat day depending on the time of year. These meals allow families to gather in a festive environment and to celebrate Shabbat together. For details about an upcoming meal or to make reservations, please contact Miriam at the synagogue office.

Shabbatons & Themed Shabbats

Shaarei Shomayim often participates in city-wide Shabbaton events and hosts unique programming for Shabbat. Recent highlights include the YU Zichron Dov Beit Midrash Shabbaton, Shabbat Itanu, and the March of the Living Shabbat.

Shaarei Shomayim proudly participates in UJA’s annual Shabbat Itanu, an opportunity for synagogues to demonstrate their commitment to furthering the goal of true inclusion in our community.

Each spring, Shaarei Shomayim presents the March of the Living Shabbat where we hear from the participating youth and their chaperones about their remarkable experiences.

There is also special Shabbat programming to mark Shabbat Shira, as well as the popular Shabbat Unplugged series featuring Dr. Elliott Malamet, and more.

Young Families Programming

We are blessed with an active group of young families who gather regularly at our shul for special events. These include Shabbat meals and special pre-holiday programming. For information on joining this group, please contact Avital Strauchler.

Silber Family Lecture Series

The Silber Family Lecture Series brings the best and most insightful speakers to our community. This program embodies Shaarei Shomayim’s leading role as the place where topical, impactful Jewish ideas and issues are discussed and debated with top scholars. Our vision is to create a community culture of honest engagement with the world in which we live giving us the knowledge to make it a better place for all.

The Silber Family Lecture Series is generously sponsored by Allan & Hinda Silber.
